Freedom for Omar Campoverde and all political prisoners of the Guevarist Movement in Ecuador

It is in the maximum security prison of Cotopaxi, Ecuador, that political prisoner Omar Campoverde denounces the way in which prisoners are fed: only once a day, served on the floor to be eaten with the fingers, without cutlery, on the knees. This and other ill-treatment, such as physical and psychological torture, were exposed at his habeas corpus hearing in the first half of February 2024. However, his just habeas corpus was not granted.

Omar is one of the eight Ecuadorian activists from the Guevarist Land and Freedom Movement (MGTL) imprisoned in 2022. An action orchestrated by Ecuador’s military forces under the accusation that they are a terrorist organization. Nothing is more false than an accusation from a state that has been massacring its people, especially indigenous people, for centuries. Nothing is more false than wanting to criminalize militants who are fighting for the liberation of their people. The MGTL organizes communities for their sovereignty with training in community development, popular education and self-defence; building libraries and cultural spaces.

The FOB (Federation of Revolutionary Syndicalist Organizations of Brazil) stands in solidarity with Omar Campoverde and all political prisoners in Ecuador. We call for their freedom.

POLITICAL PRISONERS, FREEDOM NOW
